Performance by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphony Band, Donald S. George, conductor.
Notes on the Fantasia Nova soundfiles: The alt. audio are a different recording than the one on our 1991 cassettes - almost a wind ensemble version (mvts. 1 and 2 ), and recorded in closer-to-studio conditions, it is clearer than the previous version, and different in some small details (being a performance of a pre-publication manuscript, I think). One detail that matters to me is the premier appearance of the lion's roar which the UWEC percussion players managed to secure. It played, so far as I know, only once, and then broke. It's here, on this recording in mvt. 1 (sounds like furniture moving). The triple timpani roll at the end of the "Dreams" movement is also quite different, and wild, and though it's not quite what the score calls for, I kind of like it. The Sousa-styled finale is the same recording as used before ... but that would be another story. (Bob Margolis, 1/14/1999).
